UK Has Passed Italy in Most Coronavirus Deaths in Europe

It has been announced today, May 5^th, 2020, that the United Kingdom has surpassed Italy in the total number of coronavirus related deaths. UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson was even diagnosed with COVID-19 just over a month ago, however, he survived and has been recovering.

Today, Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said that 29,427 people have died with COVID-19 related complications since the pandemic began, which is more than in Italy, however, it is lower only than the United States. Within the past 24 hours, up to 5 p.m. (12 p.m. ET) Monday, the official statistic includes 693 new deaths. “It’s now clear that the second phase will be different. We will need to adjust to a new normal,” Raab stated today. “We want to make sure that the next phase is more comfortable, is more sustainable,” he followed up, “But we need to be under no illusions, the next stage won’t be easy.” Boris Johnson is scheduled to address his country’s citizens on Sunday, which will lay out the country’s next steps and will also provide information on when lockdown restrictions will begin to be relaxed.

Italian officials have revised their country’s death count to 29,315 on Tuesday. In the United States, the official death count has accumulated at more than 70,000 people, according to numbers collected by Johns Hopkins University.
