More Coronavirus Cases in New York State Than Any Other Country

On Thursday, April 9, 2020, it was reported that the state of New York had 159,937 total coronavirus cases reported and had a total of 7,067 deaths due to coronavirus complications. The number of reported cases in New York is more than any other country in the world. This news comes after it was discovered that most cases in New York came from travelers from Europe and not Asia. COVID-19 cases in other countries are as follows: Spain has had a total of 157,053 cases, Italy has had 147,577, Germany has had 119,624, France has had 117,749, and China has had 81,907. This also means that New York state has had more deaths from COVID-19 than any other country in the world. New York’s death toll also accounts for nearly 44% of deaths due to the virus in America. A bad flu season in New York state kills roughly 1,900 people a year, and COVID-19 has caused that many deaths in only the last three days.

Nearly two-thirds of New York’s hospitalized patients have been discharged. In addition, hundreds of NYPD and FDNY members have been given the green light to return to work. Johns Hopkins data shows that out of 1.6 million positive cases, more than 300,000 people around the world have recovered from COVID-19.

On Thursday Governor Cuomo praised New Yorkers for complying with social distancing, saying they had all helped in flattening the curve — and because of everyone’s commitment to compliance, the coronavirus guidelines worked better than officials had imagined.

New York City Mayor De Blasio said he would not lessen any restrictions until there is clear and continual evidence of improvement. The guide to sustained evidence includes three key metrics: hospital admissions for suspected COVID-19, ICU admissions for suspected COVID-19, and the percentage of people testing positive — trending down in unison. It is required that all those numbers have to decline for at least ten days before the city can transition to their next phase, which De Blasio said would be low levels of virus transmission.
