Lysol, Health Experts Warn Against Injecting Cleaning Products to Fight COVID-19

Home cleaning products manufacturer Lysol has joined a chorus of health experts and fellow brands in discouraging individuals from intravenously injecting disinfectants to combat COVID-19 after President Trump appeared to suggest just such a method. At a White House briefing on Thursday, Pres. Trump brought up the possibility of killing the coronavirus with the use of disinfectants and even UV light rays, yet the president’s advice included a number of potentially dangerous means of delivery.

“I see the disinfectant where it knocks it out in a minute,” Pres. Trump said. He continued: “One minute. And is there a way we can do something like that by injection inside or, or almost a cleaning? Because you see it gets on the lungs and it does a tremendous number, so it will be interesting to check that. So that you’re going to have to use medical doctors. But it sounds, it sounds interesting to me. So we’ll see.”

Lysol was quick to advise consumers against injecting or ingesting its or any other company’s disinfectant products.

“As a global leader in health and hygiene products, we must be clear that under no circumstance should our disinfectant products be administered into the human body (through injection, ingestion or any other route),” a spokesperson for Reckitt Benckiser, the owner of Lysol, said in a statement on Friday. The statement continued: “As with all products, our disinfectant and hygiene products should only be used as intended and in line with usage guidelines. Please read the label and safety information.”

Many other health experts and public officials have since expressed similar sentiments, warning individuals against taking such action.

The FDA has also recently rejected Pres. Trump’s continued advocacy for drugs such as hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin.
