Captain Brett Crozier has tested positive for COVID-19, reports the New York Times.
One of the bigger COVID-19 stories this weekend involves the highly-controversial dismissal of US Navy Captain Brett Crozier, who sent a panicked letter pleading for help as his US Navy ship saw a coronavirus outbreak.
Crozier was simply pleading for the well-being of his sailors, with deep concerns that the Theodore Roosevelt could see thousands of COVID-19 cases and cost lives of his fellow servicemen and women.
What started as 3 positive COVID-19 cases on the ship on March 24th quickly grew to over 100 last week, and is now over 155.
Critics of this move say that Crozier was simply looking out for the lives of those under his command, and a video showing his sailors cheering for him to show their support as he left the ship makes it clear that there are many who strongly disagree with the decision to fire him.
Additionally, the great-grandson of former US President Theodore Roosevelt, who the ship was named for, wrote an op-ed piece in the New York Times showing his full support for Crozier and his belief that he was simply doing the right thing. Roosevelt stated that his great-grandfather would have believed the same.
President Trump called Crozier’s decision to send the letter “terrible”, showing his full support for the decision to fire him:
“I thought it was terrible, what he did, to write a letter. I mean, this isn’t a class on literature. This is a captain of a massive ship that’s nuclear powered. And he shouldn’t be talking that way in a letter,” Trump said.
This is likely to be a highly-contested decision, and an issue that we expect to get plenty of media coverage throughout this election cycle. We wish Captain Crozier the best as he seeks to recover from his infection.
