After being admitted to the hospital on Sunday and testing positive for COVID-19 earlier in the week, Prime Minister Boris Johnson has been taken to the intensive care unit of St. Thomas Hospital in London after his symptoms worsened. The move to intensive care comes as a precaution, in case a ventilator is needed for the Prime Minister. He is understood to be conscious.
Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab, who is the first secretary of state, will be stepping in to deputize “where necessary.”
Johnson’s hospitalization comes at a critical time in the UK, as the virus is projected to peak in the country next week. Britons are, currently, on a soft lockdown. People are only allowed to leave the home for grocery shopping, medical reasons, and exercise.
Meanwhile, in a pre-planned speech on Sunday, Queen Elizabeth made a rare TV appearance to address a panicked nation. Speaking to calm and reassure, she gave a speech from her weekend home at Windsor Castle.
“We should take comfort that while we may have more still to endure, better days will return. We will be with our friends again. We will be with our families again. We will meet again.”
